Water is life: Why the quality of your water matters more than you think

Updated: Apr 22

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “drink more water,” a thousand times. But hydration isn't just about drinking more - it’s about drinking smarter. The quality of the water you drink matters more than you think, impacting everything from your energy levels to digestion, mood, skin health, and even your overall longevity.

So, let's dive in: why does hydration matter, and why is water quality non-negotiable?

Quality matters – All water isn't equal

Not all water hydrates equally. The source and quality of your water can significantly impact your health. Let’s explore the known concerns of tap and bottled water in Europe, and how ERW (Electrolyzed Reduced Water) offers a superior alternative.

Tap water in Europe: Beyond taste and smell European tap water generally meets strict safety standards, but it can still contain various chemicals that affect more than just taste and odour. Common contaminants can include:

  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS):

These "forever chemicals" are persistent in the environment and human body. Studies have found that PFAS, such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are widespread in European waters, often exceeding regulatory thresholds. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to adverse health effects, including cancer, thyroid disease, and fertility problems. (Source - European Environment Agency)

  • Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA):

A by-product of certain pesticides and industrial processes, TFA has been detected in European drinking water. Its presence is concerning due to potential health implications, including endocrine disruption. (Source - PAN Europe)

  • Disinfection By-Products (DBPs):

Chemicals like trihalomethanes (THMs) form when disinfectants used in water treatment react with natural organic matter. Long-term exposure to THMs has been associated with an increased risk of bladder and colorectal cancers. (Source - Health and Environment Alliance)

While European regulations set maximum allowable concentrations for these substances, the cumulative effect of multiple contaminants may still pose health risks. This underscores the importance of quality water filtration.

Environmental Changes: Why most water isn't as healthy as it used to be

In addition to the contaminants listed above, environmental changes have made most water sources - especially surface water - less healthy than before. Acid rain - a result of increased industrial pollution, burning fossil fuels, and agricultural runoff - has significantly impacted water quality. Acid rain lowers the pH of water sources, making the water more acidic, which can leach harmful metals such as lead and aluminium from pipes and soil into our water supply.

Plus, with pollution and environmental damage affecting ecosystems, even natural water sources, like rivers, lakes, and groundwater, are no longer as pure as they used to be. Unless it’s water sourced from pristine alpine regions, the water we drink today may be contaminated with various pollutants, some of which are not removed by traditional filtration systems.

Bottled water: Not always the pure solution

Bottled water is often perceived as a cleaner alternative, but it comes with its own set of issues:

  • Microplastics:

Studies have found microplastics in bottled water, raising concerns about potential health impacts. These tiny particles can accumulate in your body over time, potentially affecting organ function and health.

  • Added minerals:

Some bottled waters have minerals added for taste or health claims. However, the long-term health effects of consuming these added minerals are not well-studied, and the quality control of such additions can vary.

  • Environmental impact:

The production and disposal of plastic bottles contribute significantly to environmental pollution, affecting ecosystems and human health. The plastic in bottles can leach harmful substances into the water, especially when exposed to heat or light.

ERW (Electrolyzed Reduced Water): A superior alternative

ERW offers a fantastic solution to the challenges posed by tap and bottled water:

  • Advanced Filtration:  ERW systems use multi-stage filtration to remove contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities that may be present in tap and bottled water. This process ensures that your water is pure and free from harmful substances. ERW addresses common concerns like chlorine, fluorides, and pesticides found in water, improving both its taste and quality.

  • Ionization and restructuring:  ERW goes through an electrolysis process that alters the molecular structure of the water, reducing the cluster size of water molecules. This restructuring enables water to be absorbed by the body more effectively, providing deeper hydration and better detoxification. The smaller molecular clusters improve the water's ability to penetrate the cells, enhancing nutrient absorption and speeding up the elimination of toxins.

  • Antioxidant Properties:  The ionisation process imparts antioxidants to ERW, which neutralizes free radicals in the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress and damage cells over time. By providing antioxidant-rich water, ERW helps reduce oxidative damage, promoting healthier cells and slowing down the aging process.

  • pH Balance:

ERW systems can produce water at various pH levels, depending on your needs. You can select slightly acidic water for cleaning or mildly alkaline water for drinking, which can help neutralize acidity in the body, reduce inflammation, and support digestive health.

My personal hydration journey

When I first started drinking ERW, I was sceptical - could changing my water source truly impact my health so profoundly?

But within days, I noticed amazing differences: clearer skin, less brain fog, improved digestion, and noticeably higher energy levels. Friends and clients who’ve made the switch share similar experiences - transformations beyond what we initially thought possible.

I realized hydration isn’t just about drinking water; it’s about giving your body water that truly nourishes, supports healing, and elevates your entire well-being.

Your hydration quick-start

Making hydration a priority doesn't have to be complicated. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Drink at least 2 litres of high-quality water daily - ideally alkaline, filtered, or ionized.

  2. Start your morning with a large glass of water to hydrate after sleep.

  3. Replace sugary drinks and energy drinks with quality water to boost energy naturally.

  4. Use sustainable, non-plastic bottles (glass or stainless steel) to avoid microplastics and chemicals.
